The University's tartan pattern is officially registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans, a department of the Scottish government that promotes and preserves information about historic and contemporary tartans from Scotland and throughout the world. This tartan pattern was chosen from several options by over 4,200 students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters in 2022, and it may be woven only with permission from the University of Idaho. This tartan combines traditional Scottish tartan design with the iconic Vandal gold, silver, black, and white colors, the University's founding year of 1889, and Moscow's latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates to weave together a complex and intricate pattern that honors Idaho's history and continues Idaho's tradition of innovation and inclusivity.
